The Exceptional Three featured bassist Julius Roberts, drummer Greg Brooks, and guitarist andbandleader Floyd Beck. The trio is best remembered as a backing unit for vocalist Ruby Carter, a native of Thorp, West Virginia, who moved to Cleveland at age 14. Billed as the Exceptional Three featuring Ruby Carter, the foresome released their lone 45 on Way Out in 1971. Engineered by Tim Lockhart, a stand-in for Lou Ragland, <a href="spotify:album:34Zor0dkxMMUEGoLmFI69v" data-name="What About Me b/w Unlucky Girl">What About Me b/w Unlucky Girl</a> featured anonymous brass and string arrangements.

Soon after the recordings were made, Branch and Johnson upstreamed alternate mixes in California, and the company issued them as a single on their GRT imprint. A Cleveland Recording acetate featuring the titles A Trip Through The Black Underground and Monstrosity Mindon their respective sides also borethe name of the Exceptional Three, who etched six tunes into the microgrooves of at least one lacquer. Only one of those songs, “Dating A Stranger,” featured Carter’s distinct voice. The remaining tracks were double-dipped in velvety jazz, a sound Beck would revisit after returning to his native Pittsburgh. The featured artist on F&amp;M Records release “Got To Be A Man” b/w “What Belongs To Someone Else” was Floyd Beck, who would finally scored a touchdown with “Party Is The Solution” on the CBS subsidiary Precision in 1980.
