b. Stephen Jameson, 1949, London, England. This singer-songwriter’s first success came with the duo Truth, who had a UK Top 40 hit with a cover of the Beatles ‘Girl’ on Pye in 1966. He recorded solo for Pye and its subsidiary Dawn in the early 70s, under his own name, and also as Nosmo King (No Smoking!). The record company felt that ‘Goodbye Nothing To Say’, the b-side of an old Nosmo King single ‘Teenage Love’, could be a northern soul hit and sent copies to clubs under the pseudonym the Javells to give the impression that it was a USA group. This ploy made Jameson an overnight star on the northern soul circuit and a trio was quickly put together to work as the Javells in the clubs. The record, which was produced by Roger Greenaway, just missed the UK Top 20. Similar sounding follow-ups failed and the fictitious group faded as fast as it had arrived. Jameson went back to his own name and recorded without success for Decca Records in 1977.
