The band had been playing music together since they were children. They spent part of their childhood living overseas until their family settled in the west of Ireland. Like their songs, the band’s distinctive name has a story.

“It comes from the time we spent living in Japan when we were growing up,” says Shane. “‘Tree’ for us symbolizes our family connection, and we liked the word ‘Kanyu’, which means a few different things, one of which is about membership, being part of something.”

Recorded in the UK, Dublin and Galway - their debut album ‘People Street’ was co-produced by the Cluskey brothers – and hiphop icon <a href="spotify:artist:6adBZwsyxZuWDoty0Tg0lt" data-name="Ali Shaheed Muhammad">Ali Shaheed Muhammad</a> from <a href="spotify:artist:09hVIj6vWgoCDtT03h8ZCa" data-name="A Tribe Called Quest">A Tribe Called Quest</a>.
