The Kubes

The Kubes are an American psychedelic rock band formed in Fort Worth, Texas in 2018. The core lineup consists of <a href="spotify:artist:6vSVbxuFUHPtilySZVEUSx" data-name="Travis Flippo">Travis Flippo</a> (Guitar/Vocals), Spencer Fortner (Bass/Vocals), Shyan Mahmoodi (Keyboards) and Landry Smith (Drums). The band has released several studio albums and live recordings since <a href="spotify:track:0KL7yO4bpDG6GzufJRZ0bO" data-name="Apache Woman">Apache Woman</a> in September 2019.

The group formed as a power trio on September 7, 2018 in the back room of Flippo&#39;s house. The band especially respects the <a href="spotify:artist:74oJ4qxwOZvX6oSsu1DGnw" data-name="Cream">Cream</a> group’s focus on virtuosic instrumentation being the backdrop for a series of improvisations in their live shows.
“While a thicker, syrupy psychedelia a la the <a href="spotify:artist:73ndLgs6jSrpZzjyzU9TJV" data-name="Jack Bruce">Jack Bruce</a>-fronted jam band certainly does form the basis of much of The Kubes’ early music, with <a href="spotify:album:129Cp8lN7lIroUjiPzKqL1" data-name="Discovery One">Discovery One</a>, their second album, the trio seem to channel a different version of ’60s flower power: <a href="spotify:artist:3oDbviiivRWhXwIE8hxkVV" data-name="The Beach Boys">The Beach Boys</a>. Discovery One is a pseudo concept album about an unnamed protagonist who learns to play “space blues” over the course of the 11 songs. Tracks like “<a href="spotify:track:4r45DTceQcWLeJ6FfWPyyd" data-name="Moon Going Round">Moon Going Round</a>” and “<a href="spotify:track:3tPTM4hCqrj6rfKoknV3s0" data-name="The Ninth Circle">The Ninth Circle</a>” leave behind the heavier sound from the band’s first album, <a href="spotify:album:6MwN7fwRNEfFSf4skdrx1o" data-name="With The Kubes">With The Kubes</a>, and give way to an airy <a href="spotify:artist:4Q82S0VzF8qlCb4PnSDurj" data-name="Brian Wilson">Brian Wilson</a>-esque pop.”

The band has achieved an inimitable live sound on the stage, with 2023 bringing a new member on keyboards, Shyan Mahmoodi. (Live)</a> is out now, featuring the quartet on the stage catalogued in ‘24.
