The Kursk was formed in Springfield, Missouri, in 2006 by guitarist/vocalist Skyler Smith and drummer Sebastian Karuppan. At the end of 2006, bassist Clinton Houseman joined the group, solidifying the band's first era, which was characterized by a sound heavily rooted in fuzzed-out blues rock. After disbanding in early 2008, Skyler and Clinton revived The Kursk in 2010, with their songwriting now blending the blues-rock jams with a melodic sensibility reminiscent of classic power pop. In 2012, the band released their self-titled debut EP, produced by Lou Whitney (The Skeletons, The Morells), with Alex Stephens and Nathan Atkinson contributing drums to the recording. In 2015, The Kursk released their first full-length album, Arrow, produced by Mark Bilyeu (Big Smith, The Creek Rocks), with Tim LaBrie handling drumming duties. Arrow introduced a new direction for the band, reminiscent of the early 90s alternative rock boom. In 2016, The Kursk recruited Seth Randolph as their drummer, and recorded their second album, the self-produced Disassociation, which was released in 2018. Beginning with Disassociation, The Kursk has solidified their own unique sound, informed by their early influences, along with elements of progressive rock and metal. The band is currently writing material for their third album, with plans to record in 2021.
