The Madeleines began as an indie folk duo based in Virginia in 2021, with Karen Laws singing and Michael Richardson playing guitar and taking production duties. Their debut Crawlspace EP was released in September 2021, on which cover songs by their indie heroes are performed with the duo's own distinctive sweetness, melancholy, and left-field sensibility. After receiving positive attention for Crawlspace, the duo sought to expand their sound to include a full band. The new lineup included Joichaun Taylor on drums, Sean Hynes on keyboards, Sawyer Camden on bass and guitar, and Kyle Russo on bass. The Madeleines began playing original songs written by Richardson, and they self-released their debut full-length album The Old Man the Boat in August 2022.
