The Mae Shi are an American art punk and experimental pop band original from Los Angeles, California. They write and perform frantic and joyous music about the end of the world. They are closely associated with The Smell, an all-ages, volunteer-run venue in Los Angeles. Their music has always fused traditional rock-and-roll instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums, and voice) with non-standard sound forms, including sounds constructed using Max/MSP, consumer-level synthesizers (Casios, omnichords, etc.), drum machines, modular synthesizers, and homemade instruments. The members of the Mae Shi have gone on to be in dozens of bands, including <a href="spotify:artist:2SyngtVR15lcs8DRa1hXjo" data-name="Skull Tape">Skull Tape</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6RCfd2eOi3ENzyBNBNp2hB" data-name="Turbo Lightning">Turbo Lightning</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1511ad2ienFTL8JAwbUTFa" data-name="Gowns">Gowns</a>, and Signals. In 2022, founding member Tim reunited four other Mae Shi members (Jeff, Brad, Ezra, and Corey) for a project that became the band <a href="spotify:artist:3K2btrGxKF0aZyObsZI3S7" data-name="HLLLYH">HLLLYH</a>.
