On returning home from his stint in Longwave (era 2001-2004), Mikey James (Hawker M. James, Admirers, Mikey Jukebox) quickly got back to what he'd always done, which was to write song after song after song. He assembled The Mercies (but first gigging as DJ Dick James/Footage), with best friend Brandon Lown, guitarist Adam Ford, and long time acquaintance, Jonny Stevens, on drums (he also recorded and co-produced "The Mercies"). The music cements the beginning of James' transition from an experimental lo-fi recordist to songwriter on an ever-expanding quest to hone his craft. Before their quick dissolution in late 2007, just following their debut release, The Mercies landed on the CMJ chart, got spins from KCRW, and landed a distribution deal with Warner. The first of many times that James' songs would catch the attention of industry platforms with little to no budget or promotion, getting sync placements on TV shows such as "Community" and "Gossip Girl".
