The Mighty Project began as the solo endeavor of Keito Otsuka, who began recording music in his bedroom studio in his hometown. Rooted in DIY principles, Otsuka wrote, recorded, and produced the entire early catalog himself, establishing a hazy, melancholic sound palette.
In 2020, the project released its debut album, Total Football, which included the standout single “Be A Fool.” The track was picked up by KEXP, one of the U.S.’s most influential indie radio stations, and gained exposure on U.S. college radio charts—rare for an unsigned Japanese act.
In 2023, they released their second album, The Queen of the Silver Screen, a dreamier, more cinematic evolution of the debut.
After several years abroad (including a stint in Malta), Otsuka returned to Tokyo and reassembled The Mighty Project as a live-performing band. In 2024, they released “Easy Way Out,” a track produced by Freddie Cowan (formerly of The Vaccines), showcasing a sharper and more polished rock sound while maintaining lyrical depth.
In 2025, the band released “Cathy” and the 5-track EP The Best Die Immortalised via Japanese indie label FRIENDSHIP., signaling a more structured, emotionally potent direction.
