Toronto’s TT blends R&B, Afrobeats, and melodic hip hop to create a style that reflects where she lives. “My sound is the city, a mix of everything that Toronto encompasses,” she says.
“When I first started ‘Out of Touch,’ I made it off a feeling, but now I feel like it manifested into my reality,” says TT. “In a sense, I feel like it’s an end to the beginning — out of touch with what once was and trying to connect to who I can and will be.”
Starting her musical journey in the church, TT was deeply involved in the vibrant music scene. A drummer too, she creates her music by watching for the gaps, she says. “It’s funny, people say my cadence is like a talking drum. I quiet my mind and ears and listen for the pockets that I can fill in.
“Typically, it starts with a melody, and then I fill in the words. The melodies tend to have a shadow of a word or a bar that can be easily filled later. The main goal is getting the vibe down first. Words tend to confuse the feel, but a melody can hold an emotion.”
“I want to use my platform to give back, inspire and motivate whoever is around me, following or even just tapping into the music. I want them to know that I’m from the culture and for the culture, and that will never change, no matter where I’m at in this journey. Every step is for them.”
