The New York Robbers are from Cape Town, South Africa. They have never been to New York, but might like to do a few gigs there in the future. They haven't robbed anyone yet either. The band was formed in 2008 and comprises of Lehza (vocals, guitar, keyboard, tambourine) and Hein (vocals, drums, bass), who also happen to be brother and sister.
Lehza and Hein like to make feel-good music that any happy people can dance to, and can be described as "indie with a twist". Among their influences are The White Stripes, The Ting Tings, Fire Through the Window, The Killers, Roxette, merry-go-rounds and hula-hoops.
The band's EP, titled "8-Bit Heroes", was recorded in pyjamas at age 16 and 18 whilst drinking copious amounts of tea and continually having to tell Dougie (their cute talking dog who features on the first track, "Mom") to stop talking so much in between takes. No puppies were harmed during the recording however – only hugged.
Mixed by international award-winning producer, Jurgen von Wechmar (Sunset Studios), their first single, “Dream Girl”, hit number 3 on the South African Top 30 Download Chart and was reviewed by News24, who rated the song 5 stars. The New York Robbers have been featured on various other platforms, including the homepage of Blunt Magazine, and have enjoyed radio airplay worldwide.
