The Odds were formed in 1978 by vocalist Sam Leyland (later replaced by Keiran Moses) and bassist Bill McKeown recruiting Colin Brockwell on Drums and Stuart Matthewman on Sax. The line-up went through several guitarists including Keiran and finally Jonathan “Twig” Leafe.
They played a passionate mix of Punk/Pop/Rock with 60s covers along with their own high energy catchy songs building a strong following, both Supporting and Headlining at all the UK's iconic music venues.
Positive music press reviews combined with rising popularity of their music led to Adrian Collins of Red Rhino Records releasing their first single “Saturday Night”. Recorded in 1979, and released in November of that year, the 7” vinyl sold out and shot up the National Indie Charts.
The band released a Ska arrangement of ‘Yesterday Man’ (Chris Andrews) in 1980 on JSO Records that made the Radio 1 playlist.
In 1980 Sam left to pursue a solo “Odds” project and Keiran took over Vocals with Twig picking up Guitar. New management landed them a string of dates across the UK as well as a hugely successful tour of Sweden and Germany in early 1981 to promote their third and final single “Fool in the Crowd” on CM Records.
in Autumn of 1981, they split. Stuart left and later enjoyed a successful career with ‘Sade’ whilst Colin left the music industry altogether and keen to create a more current sound, The Odds morphed into Moscow with a brand-new, more mature and melancholic agenda. That’s another story…
