The Portland Sound is a musical collaboration between geographically remote songwriters/producers Jon Dye and Matt Champness. Under the influence of lockdown and technology, they have now begun to release the fruits of their work, aided by an international cast of musicians. Their output is eclectic and original, ranging though pure electronica, folk, some classical influence, pop and whatever else takes their fancy. The common thread isn't genre or instrumentation but a desire to create thought-provoking music that rewards repeated listening and is generously scattered with moments of unabashed ear candy.
Their songwriting craft is influenced by others who wanted to try new things: David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk, Steve Reich, The Beatles, Brian Eno and Kate Bush, – to name a few.
Their recent releases include Dolly (electronic chillout), When I Call Your Name (semi-operatic big band showtune), Firecracker (electronic/folk) and Wonderwoman (laid back blues-y). Whatever comes next will likely require another box style wise.
