Richard Del Connor sat playing his acoustic Alvarez guitar on his San Diego, California front lawn. The same lawn he’d mown as a kid before he was exiled to Newfoundland in 1970. He put some ads in a local paper and eventually Richard found suitable musicians to complete his band to perform his first rock operas, “Underground,” and “In Violence,” which would be combined into the novel SID’S PLACE written later in 1984.
As they prepared to perform their first 1977 concerts in San Diego: backyards and college keg parties… They needed a band name although Richard wanted to just bill the band by the rock opera name, “Underground.”
As a punk-pop band in Hollywood 1978 THE RICH were not a popular name to use as a band name. Bad marketing. Plus we had guitar solos. A big no-no in punk music.
As I changed band members from year to year, The Rich became a band name of endurance. Even the prior band with an unreleased album from Bonita Studio was eventually referred to as THE RICH band. This band LOTUS was an awesome band in 1976. I plan to release that album with great excitement.
The 1984 rock opera, Coyote In A Graveyard, drew the compliments of Michael J. Fox and Stephen Spielberg. The band was usually billed by the show name, COYOTE IN A GRAVEYARD, but all recordings referred to the band name as, The Rich.
I stopped using THE RICH as a band name in 1991 when I moved to Utah and formed American Zen, ‘America’s First Buddhist Rock Band!™’
