Born from punk and new wave of the early 1980's, The Willies exploded onto Portland, Oregon's Eastside music scene in 1991, quickly becoming a local favorite with their power-pop-punk sensibility ala Talking Heads, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and XTC.
"Not bad for a bunch of fuckin' preppies!" raved a biker after one of the band's first shows. Indeed, The Willies were named Willamette Week's Best New Band in 1992. Or was it 1993? We're old now and we can't remember.
These kings of quirky power pop were known for high energy sets full of onstage antics: shaving lead singer Eric Levine's head during a cover of "Sampson and Delilah", pelleting the crowds with potato guns, and performing a new year's eve show in diapers. They shared stages with Sublime, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Jerry Joseph's Little Women, Hummingfish, and other notable acts of the 1990s. They disbanded in 1998, but the legacy lives on.
