Thea May, an Anishnawbe artist from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, is an emo kid at heart. She creates music out of necessity, driven by raw emotion and instinct. Singing and performing have always been impulses for May, a force of truth seeking expression. Mining — both a former job and metaphor for her emotional depths — reflects the heart of her journey: painful but healing.

“I’m here to share my story and provide a safe space in an unsafe world,” says May. Her debut EP, Brought to You by Tragedy (Ishkode Records), is a fierce and compassionate exploration of renewal. With her powerful voice and unapologetic honesty, May invites listeners to connect and find strength in shared pain. “I’m on this journey for every version of me that suffered, and for anyone who fears sadness is all there is. This is for them — and for me.”
