I'm Jan. Thomas and the Evil Computer is my solo project. You might notice that my name isn't Thomas. I used to think that was funny. Now I'm stuck with it. After spending years playing in bands that no-one has heard of (Cartoon Khaki/Nog/Super McBand NaNa, Beep, Junior Jellybeans), I went on to make solo recordings that just as few people have heard. Wearing the hats of producer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist, vocalist and engineer, I try to cram as many notes as I can fit into little two minute slices of time. The music can be simultaneously playful and catchy while deceptively jumping from one odd meter to the next. The math-pop sounds draw inspiration from a wide spectrum of artists starting at 90's era Weezer and ending in the land of Frank Zappa and Cardiacs - making stops at almost every Rob Crow project along the way. My 2006 album "Math Teachers Count" has been called "the closest thing to a prog punk video game ever conceived of by a human being" (Vish Khanna, Exclaim). I thought that was a really nice thing for someone to say.
After an extended hiatus from releasing music, I've dusted off the TATEC hats and was surprised to find they mostly still fit. And there is a story about the name "Thomas and the Evil Computer" but you don't need to worry your pretty little head about that, okay?
