There is an aged, a bit scratchy grand piano crafted sometime in the 1920s, standing on the wooden floor of a house located in a small coastal town in Northern Denmark. It’s not a particularly fine sound this piano yields. It is, however, the sound of Thomas Meilstrup’s childhood and – even more important – his go-to spot for writing songs. “There is a certain sound to that piano, that sparks my inspiration, regardless of what time of the day it is or what mood I am in,” he explains.

The 25-year-old Danish singer and songwriter, who is now living in vibrant Copenhagen, has been surrounded by music from the very first moment. His mom, a singer, his dad a successful producer, Thomas’ passion for music has been unwavering. He started to teach himself how to play the piano at the age of four. Apart from his big love for the instrument, he is also intrigued by analog synthesizers. “As long as there are keys, I'm happy,” he smirks. For all his life, Thomas has been singing at every possible occasion. And boy can he sing! While there is a warm, almost velvety feel to his voice in lower registers, he effortlessly reaches higher pitches with a bright, clear vocal color – a feat even more astounding considering he never received a classical music education.
