A few years ago....
I left the job I’d been doing for 21 years. Not just any job. I ran a charity helping freelance journalists around the world. Actively involved in international journalism and human rights, it was an all-absorbing role and - the biggest displacement activity ever. Because all the time, hidden deep away…was this other ‘thing’.
I sang from childhood, never had any formal music training and chose a different working life . But I was always in touch with my inner jazz voice. I knew I had music in me – and eventually it had to come out. I began listening again.
I listened at work, at home, in the car, in the street, at concerts, gigs, jams, opening my ears to music across every genre. It took me over. I threw in the day job and step by step, began to make music.
Since then, I've sung in gigs and jams in London at Green Note, Karamel N22, Toulouse Lautrec, Vortex, Piano Smithfield, Max Klub in Slovenia and Jazz Café Alto in Amsterdam. With two years of sell-out shows in the EFG London Jazz Festival, at the Actors Church in Covent Garden (2023) and at Hoxton Hall (2024) . In 2023 , my debut album ‘Songs for Curly’ was released . BBC Radio London presenter Jumoke Fashola hailed it as “ a very distinctive voice – a stunning debut .Tina has leapt into the world of music with both feet”.
My second album, where I am joined by some wonderful musicians, will be coming out in 2025 - STAND BY .....
