Tiny Sun, a collaboration between Dragonette, The Henrys frontman Don Rooke, and film score composer and arranger Jonathan Goldsmith, uses time as both constraint and subject. With every piece clocking in under two minutes, brevity becomes the only prevailing constant. These compositions sharpen the ache and ghostliness of love lost, mirroring the way memory arrives in fragments: intense, fleeting, and impossible to hold.
Martina Sorbara first met Don Rooke in the early days of her career, performing at a West Coast folk festival before her eventual foray into the EDM world. Though Rooke, an influential lap steel guitarist who has recorded with Mary Margaret O’Hara, Doug Paisley and Iggy Pop, was pursuing a very different path from Sorbara. The two remained in communication, remotely sharing their musical works-in-progress with each other over the years.
The beginnings of this project started through small, experimental folk fragments Don shared, material he had, in fact, been recording in parallel with the project’s third collaborator, film composer Jonathan Goldsmith, a four-time Gemini Award–winning force in Canadian television and movies. Needing an outlet, Sorbara wrote brief, elegiac songs in response.
Over the course of a decade (a decade with many long gaps), the trio assembled a full album: 18 experimental tracks, each pared down to their essence, unfolding like framed artworks — shaped from instrumental sketches passed back and forth via email.
