TJ Welch and The Wasted started up in Boston in 2023, founded by TJ Welch—best known as the guitarist for punk veterans The Welch Boys. Looking to branch out from some of punk’s speed and aggression, TJ envisioned a catchy and high-energy sound rooted in rock and roll. He linked up with drummer Eric Bowman, and the two quickly started writing songs. Soon after, bassist Mike Lucantonio—who's played with Gang Green and Temporary Insanity—joined in, bringing some serious groove. TJ’s son Owen came on board to play rhythm guitar, and Eric Wells added some extra flavor on keys.
What came out of it all is a mix of punk energy and rock melody—something TJ jokingly calls “Dad Rock.” Since then, they’ve been playing shows around Boston and dropped their debut album on Sonic Lobotomy Records. The album was recorded at Mad Oak Studios in Boston, and mixed by Ronan Murphy (King Crimson, Gwar). It features special guest appearances from Boston rock and roll guitar legend Jon Butcher, keyboardist Arlan Oscar from Joe Bonamassa’s band, Boston saxophone colossus Marty Philips, and former Welch Boys guitarist PJ Dionne—adding even more soul and character to their sound.
With solid local support and a growing buzz, TJ Welch and The Wasted are ready to bring their music to a wider audience.
