In November, I had an incredible day in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, at Charlie Merriman's place. It was like a small country Woodstock—great people, great music, and the kind of atmosphere that reminds you why you fell in love with music in the first place. I had the chance to play and sing some old songs, along with a few I’ve written and recorded myself, alongside other musician friends who were there and willing to play along. It was a special time.
When it comes to songwriting, I focus on crafting melodies that stick with you—something you can hum along to, no matter the genre. Every song I write is clean, and if it’s got a good melody, I’m all in.
I’m an Okie by birth, now calling Arkansas home. I grew up surrounded by music—it was woven into our family’s life. My folks first realized I had an ear for harmony when they heard me and my sister singing together, me singing harmony, completely unaccompanied. From that moment on, I was always encouraged to sing—whether with others or on my own.
Fast forward a bit—I moved to Arkansas, got married in 1980, and I’m still blessed to be with that wonderful woman. She’s been my guide through so much, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now retired, I’ve finally had the time to dive into writing my own music, and I’m loving every minute of it.
