What was your worst breakup? When did your heart get broken?
These were the two questions that were explored during a writing session back in 2019. I was reflecting on a night with no sleep and a lot of "overindulgence" when the sun was well on its way to the highest point (the next day) and I was settling into my lowest, there was a knock at the door. Upon opening the door I heard the words that were years overdue "You have been served". I was holding Divorce Papers. Although the relationship had ended years before that moment stuck with me and this is where "Gone" began, a very personal experience. A reflection on a moment where I knew in my heart I should have done better. A percussive phrase was stuck in my head and would sit there for years. "Gone with the Paper"
Ottawa-based producer Eric Eggleston said "That sounds different, play it again" We were reviewing voice notes on my phone. I record everything that pops into my head and then they are shared with Eric in writing sessions. These clips are raw, improvisational, gibberish for the most part. Eric liked what he heard and it aligned with a beat that he was mulling over. It was laid down in minutes and would be revisited many times over the next 2 years. Finally, it is ready and sharing it honestly feels very scary. Set for release on Oct 18th, “Gone” is about as personal as it gets.
