Torn Sail is a British psychedelic band fronted by Huw Costin. The band's first track– Birds- was released on cult balearic label Claremont 56 in 2011; Treasure (Part 1) was released in 2012, also on Claremont 56. The finished album didn’t surface until 2017 – finally released on Costin’s own Cwm Saerbren label. Despite a very limited pressing and zero marketing budget ‘This Short Sweet Life’ has picked up a lot of acclaim from serious music lovers, and tracks from the album have been reworked & remixed by artists as diverse as Andre Lodemann (Bestworks), Tiago (Paper), Cos/Mes, Frankie Valentine (Claremont 56), & Shrinkwrap (Soft Rocks).
LEISURE & TECHNOLOGY finds Torn Sail at thier most daring. Its sprawling nature represents a celebration of the very freedom that comes with independence – over the years, COSTIN has released much of his work himself – and though it’s arguably that very independence which has left him short of the budgets required for publicists and marketing campaigns, it’s also allowed him to make bold, singular, extravagant records of rare, uncompromised passion. Pink Floyd, The Blue Nile, Robert Wyatt, Massive Attack, O.Rang, David Axelrod: you’ll hear all of them at some point or other, but rarely for long. Each of his records swerves from the beaten track – though COSTIN always eyes his destination – and its subtle surprises still startle after repeated listens. LEISURE & TECHNOLOGY simply does this better than ever.
