Ben Ashdown and Jason Boardman were part of the Manchester clubbing scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ben frequented a now closed nightclub called "The Boardwalk" where Jason Boardman was resident DJ. This was a hedonistic time and the early years of the Rave scene with all he associated positives and negatives.
Truant was formed after Jason quite by chance moved into the apartment adjacent to Ben's. They recognised that they had much in common as their record collections could be heard and appreciated through the walls!
Ben had a studio set up in his living room and this is where the first Truant single "Naked Ape" was written which was sent to Factory Records as a demo, which was declined. Paperecordings came to the rescue and Truant's first single was pressed and distributed.
