The scene is set - in a cozy living room you have just ensured those fireside embers' hypnotic glow for the next shindig and change. Outside, winter's blowing up some storm or other, whereas Tyler Bernhardt Trio is about to blow a different sort of cool, a musical cocktail half-hour of evergreens either overplayed or largely forgotten. In their imaginative hands, however, the nostalgic-cliché transforms into refreshingly crisp. A guest arrives, the nucleus of voice, piano and brushes now amplified by warm thumping bass notes, keeping those slipper-embraced feet of yours tapping... tubaist extraordinaire, Dan Peck, takes time off from the NYCB orchestra pit, and swings with delight. And so we feel inclined to add these impromptu readings to an expanding catalog of yuletide classics. Sinatra - "frosted windowpanes" simply won't cut it, "it's our kinda tinsel'd-town!"
