As Umfang, Emma Burgess-Olson produces raw, abstract techno on analog equipment, recording everything in a single take with a minimal amount of post-production. Inspired by early Detroit techno and acid house, the self-taught musician's visceral, freely flowing tracks are sparse and lo-fi but kinetic and listener-friendly. Burgess-Olson was born in the Bronx but grew up in Kansas, and eventually moved to Brooklyn in 2010. In 2013, she began a monthly residency at Brooklyn's Bossa Nova Civic Club called Technofeminism, and she co-founded the Discwoman collective the following year. Serving as a platform and booking agency focusing on female-identifying DJs and electronic musicians, Discwoman has curated events in over a dozen cities since its formation, and has earned wide acclaim from the dance music press. Umfang's first release, a cassette titled OK, appeared on Canadian label 1080p in 2015. The label issued her 12" EP Riffs the following year. Her tracks also appeared on digital and cassette compilations issued by labels such as Videogamemusic, Allergy Season, and Phinery Tapes. In 2017, Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolour released Umfang's full-length Symbolic Use of Light. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
