Hi, I am Uncommon Nigerian. I’m from Lagos, Nigeria (born & bred). I’m a practicing Engineer in Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Industry [apologies to the environmentalists; stream my music so I can quit my day job :) ]. I love playing chess (a lot!) and yes, I’m a rapper (<a href="spotify:track:1nwQAL6fNIAk9JABt3e4u8" data-name="Round 1">Round 1</a>) and producer (inspired by all genres like <a href="spotify:track:6MNWFJmG8DbYKRKznApJB7" data-name="Joy!">Joy!</a> ). However, I’m now fully into LoFi Hip-Hop (<a href="spotify:track:21mCv9OHcFbtnPEWQv0K6S" data-name="Magic Blips">Magic Blips</a>) & Downtempo (<a href="spotify:track:1Ufh0h8tmfVTJe1uGn0OGL" data-name="Melodic Seesaw">Melodic Seesaw</a>).
I started rapping in secondary school in the early 2000s. I got into some trouble for writing and performing (during a school social event) a rap song in which I dissed my seniors (That wasn’t much fun). Of course it never crossed my mind to go “professional”, because over here you were practically considered a failure if you didn’t go on to University and study Medicine, Engineering or Law (Lol!). I think things are changing though (What I really mean is: "I hope...").
In the University of Lagos (where I went to study Systems Engineering), there used to be a gathering called BoomBap Box, under a tree close to the Faculty of Science. It was a gathering of rappers, beatboxers, hip-hop lovers in general. Anyone was free to come drop bars. It was always quite inspiring.
Apart from the guys I met at BoomBap Box (T-Rex, Sergio, X-Y, Syllabus, K-9, etc.), some of my other early influences are Nigerian Rappers - Trybesmen (Eldee, KB & Freestyle) and Mode 9. I also especially enjoyed rappers like Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Canibus & Eminem (plus several others).
