Used To Be New - also nicknamed an “instrumental storytelling band”, is an Amsterdam Power trio that draws its influences from jazz, fusion, and free improvisation. Through unconventional instrumentation centering the EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) as its lead voice, the band uses a wide palette of sounds creating a large ensemble sound yet with the intensity of a small one.
After releasing three albums where the music could be cornered in one music genre or another, "Transduction" marks a transitional point in the band's repertoire and approach utilizing composed pieces that carry a sense of ambiguity regarding melodies and rhythm. At times, it's hard to know if the band is improvising or playing a written part, yet the sense groove is evident, complementing the compositions to deliver a full story. "Transduction" shows the full potential of the EWI as a performance instrument, lead or accompaniment, in somewhat of an electro-acoustic wrap, coupled together with the saxophone to tribute the sound of the jazz bands from the seventies and eighties.
