Vaagenat (Wake of Night, meaning a restless night, a night of holding vigil over a sick or dying loved one, or keeping guard) was formed in 2020. Jesper Bøggild-Christensen and Remi Kofoed Johannesen set out to form a band with the intention of releasing the feelings of hardship, sorrow and loneliness caused by the long months of isolation, sickness and death during the pandemic. The main inspiration would be their shared love of a certain Swedish post-metal band formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1998.
With Peter Kondrup, Simon Edelved Jakobsen and Kristoffer Damgaard Rasmussen recruited, the band was officially formed in 2021.
While the band draws inspiration from other post-metal and sludge legends, they also draw inspiration from genres such as doom, progressive metal and hardcore, to name a few. The end result is a distinct mix, that the band chooses to typify ”sludgy post-metal”.
The band initially released two songs to Bandcamp, the groovy SLUG and the hard-hitting It Bleeds. The bands has since been working on perfecting their sound, and this October, the band releases the EP, What Comes After, containing two seminal tracks, Amygdala and Betelgeuse, contained withing a trio of ambient tracks, Præludium, Interludium, and Postludium. The EP showcases the band’s ability to write song that challenge the listener with melody, complex time signatures, and earth-shattering riffs.
What Comes After will be available on all major streaming services October 4th, 2024.
