Vaggelis Mamalakis is a musician, singer, and songwriter, based somewhere between Athens and Crete—both in geography and in sound. Rooted in tradition but always reaching for something new, he now introduces his debut single “Skopos tis Rizas”, an echo of his upcoming personal album “Kato ap to vouno”.
Born and raised in Athens, it wasn’t long before the pulse of Crete took hold. Since the age of four, Vaggelis has been studying at the Filippos Nakas Conservatory, exploring a range of instruments and repertoire such as Cretan lute, piano, percussion, jazz electric guitar, as well as advanced classical and jazz music theory. Somewhere in between all this, he also managed to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from NTUA—because why not complicate things a bit more?
For years, he has been active in the field of traditional Cretan music through various musical ensembles. Notable career milestones include his selection in 2021 by the Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association as a young artist, and in 2022, his representation of Crete in the performance “The lyras of the land and of the sea” at Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall.
Blending raw tradition in the pop scene, he has also been active collaborating with artists like Manos Pirovolakis , Giannis Nikolaou, and Nikos Ziogalas. In 2023, he brought the Cretan lute into new territory, as part of the folk-rock band Topos, where he contributed some of his original compositions and arrangements to the album "Ola Se Mia Thalassa”.
