The genesis of Wishbones – the first solo project from Nate Valdez – came with the death of his beloved grandfather three years ago. Nate spent his teenage years working with him in the one-man mortuary he ran in Las Animas, Colorado, a small rural town which is Spanish for “souls,”an apt name for this set of songs, filled with intimations of mortality, fading memories, regrets and even the presence of otherworldly spirits. It was there, and later assisting a medical examiner in Denver, that Nate learned the empathy for people he displays in his songwriting, a skill he learned from comforting survivors who had lost loved ones.
In the end, Wishbones is about confronting our own mortality and human frailties... “Nothing ever prepares you for when someone close to you dies,” says Nate. And while the lyrics may be dark, the melodies redeem them and turn hopeful. “That’s the only way I can verbalize it. Music is the cure and the disease.”
Wishbones offers a little of both. Even if you don’t break off the bigger one.
