During the winter of 2009, in the master bedroom of a modestly sized home in suburban Glendale, Arizona, a young boy began absent mindedly singing along to the guitar playing of his father. The older man, having much musical experience, noticed his son’s ability to follow and predict the movements of his chord patterns without even giving it his full attention. He decided to test the boy’s musical ability by changing the chord patterns into increasingly more complex movements. The young singer was able to follow along perfectly. The obvious next step was to try singing words. So, the son sang a melody and words to his father’s music. Their first song was begun, and simultaneously, their future was decided.
For over 10 years since, Glen and Josh West have written, recorded, and performed their music together under the aptly juvenile name, Vanilla Aardvark. At the time it was a father’s humorous, random answer to an adolescent Josh’s request to put a name to their musical endeavor. Since then that name has become to them the focus of all their earthly efforts.
Vanilla Aardvark’s sound could be described as a trademark blend of emotional power pop and alternative angst, amplified by the versatile guitar, thoughtful lyrics, and powerful vocals. Their influences include 90’s grunge such as Soundgarden and Nirvana, Britpop acts like Oasis and Supergrass, Alternative bands like Weezer, Radiohead, and Jeff Buckley, as well as older artists like The Beatles and The Zombies.
