At primary school we were told a story about a little girl who is seriously ill. She has fever dreams and keeps talking to an imaginary friend. The fever gets so bad that eventually she cannot keep her eyes open. She then turns to her friend, saying, “I am going to close my eyes so that I can see you better”. To this day, I have not been able to find this story, but the sentence has stuck in my mind since. In my songs the birds, which live in stolen cups and only talk at night are meant to heal, yet the longer they keep talking, the deeper the dream.
