Early Life Forms is a new quartet fronted by Belgian guitarist and sound wizard Vitja Pauwels, and in January 2024, they released their self-titled debut album; a stunning, one-off live show joined by special guest Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, John Zorn, ...). Early Life Forms is Vitja Pauwels (various guitars), Frederik Leroux (baritone guitar), Laurens Dierickx (hammond organ) and Casper Van De Velde (drums).
Drawing on latin, jazz, cuban and rock with a touch of exoticism and cinematic explorations, Pauwels wrote a new repertoire for what would be the band’s first ever live show.
Vitja Pauwels previously made two solo albums.
He released his debut album 'Day at Half Speed' in 2019; a live recording of a concert he performed in Trondheim (Norway), which explored the possibilities of acoustic guitar and live electronics. This experiment became a new artistic path for Pauwels and showcased his musical versatility, with second album 'Drift By, Sink In', released to critical acclaim in 2022.
On this studio album he started using resonator -, 12-string -, pedal steel guitars as well as numerous kinds of electronics and his voice.
