Wasp Summer is the solo project of Samantha Wareing, Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist resident in Berlin who released debut solo album Close As A Slow Dance in 2012.
Born in 1975, in England's West Country, she emigrated to Australia’s Gold Coast in 1981, immersing herself in the country's booming 80s and 90s pop/rock scene, and starting her first band at 15.
After studying voice at Southern Cross University, Wareing moved to Melbourne in 1997. Her first band as songwriter was power-pop trio Lazy 8, started in 1999 with ex-Frente bassplayer Tim O’Connor and drummer/guitarist Darren Foster.
In 2002, she co-founded post-dream-rock band The Mime Set with guitarist Andrew Watson. They played regularly, releasing 2005s 'Sleeping Is The Hardest Part', and 2008s 'I’ve Only Ever Lived in Rivertowns', plus a handful of EPs. In 2005, The Mime Set joined with Melbourne spoken word artist Sean M. Whelan to create radical ‘soundtracked spoken word’ show ‘Death To Your Dreams’, plus 2006s ‘LCUK: Falling In and Out of Love’ and, with spoken word artist Emilie Zoey Baker, 2007s ‘Sweet Cowboy’. Sean M. Whelan and The Mime Set were invited to reform for a one-off show and live recording in 2014. In 2009, Wareing relocated to Berlin. Developing an intense and bittersweet solo sound mixing alt.country, indie rock and slowcore, her 2012 debut solo album was released by label A Headful of Bees. Wareing’s second Wasp Summer album ‘Mitropa’ is due May 2022
