Wave Goodbye was created by Jack Downey (<a href="spotify:artist:3WOYIoreHp1xtsWQZGJZat" data-name="Friday Life">Friday Life</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1xswnqUytoH9fTN7A6Dz0s" data-name="The Keegan Turner Band">The Keegan Turner Band</a>) in 2018. Originally called Sunset Demon, the main purpose of the project was to paint the most honest picture of what Jack was feeling at the time. Throughout that year, Sunset Demon released a series of singles, beginning with “i always fall for the wrong person,” that received acclaim on SoundCloud. The song “it’s only been three minutes and i already miss you” in particular received much attention.

2019 would prove to be a highly prolific year for the project, even with the name being changed to Wave Goodbye. From February to May, there was at least one release a month. Things briefly slowed down during the summer and fall, with Jack even considering ending the project as he transitioned into college. However, the year ended with two more singles.

2020 saw another resurgence for Wave Goodbye during the pandemic. The fiery song “no more heroes” gained attention amid the wave of sexual assault allegations plaguing the indie rock scene. The poppier “tell me it’s alright (even if it’s a lie)” also gained attention and indicated the direction the project would go.

Looking to take things to the the next level, Wave Goodbye partnered with Baron Tapes in the early winter and released “summer” in February of 2021. The seven track mini LP was a surprise success, with the run of tapes selling out in a month. The next year, Wave Goodbye released “just out of reach” through Cloudy Camper Cassettes.
