Born in 2002 near the humble seaside town of Skegness, England, a young William Jacobs grew up on a musical diet of game soundtracks - for a good while he refused to listen to anything else. He soon began making covers of his favourite pieces, which then morphed into original tracks, and by 2017 he had released his debut album, The Calm. Meditative in atmosphere and largely classical in style, it really would be The Calm before the storm. Hahahaha!!
Jacobs soon discovered the wonders of wider music culture, falling in love with the gorgeous art-rock of Radiohead, the enveloping atmospheres of Massive Attack and the intricate electronica of Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and Autechre. Armed with a newfound passion for drum machines and self-indulgence, the subsequent Ozone EP would explore a more electronic direction, while still largely retaining the melancholy of his earlier work. Also he moved to York.
These were transitional experiments on the way to something bigger, and in 2022 - on his 20th birthday, no less - this bigger thing came in the form of his second album, Mazes. It's all about intricacy and melody, filled with tracks about the uncertainty, anxiety and excitement of growing up. At least, Will thinks that's what they're about.
Post-Mazes, Will embarked on a pair of cover collaborations with the unfairly talented vocalist Roseanna Schmidt. He has also recorded and produced material for singer-songwriter Robin Torbitt and pop-icon-to-be, Adam Clayton.
