At the age of 23 in 1963, African-American folksinger Willie Wright made a little-known album for a subsidiary of Chess Records, Argo Folk. Wright was an unremarkable folk interpreter, his high and light voice exhibiting a slight flutter and gospel influence. The set was a selection of typical early-'60s folk revival material, with the singer-guitarist backed by some guitar, bass, banjo, and harmonica. Really, it wouldn't be of any interest at all, save for its presence on a label that made major contributions to blues, R&B, rock, and soul, but was rarely identified with folk music. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
