In 1997, lead vocalist/guitarist Zachreen Zakariah and bassist Aizat Zawawi were just 15-16 year olds impressionable kids playing cover tunes of bands that they were listening to while they were growing up. They formed “Scorched Earth Policy” which was an emocore quintet that quickly thrived but eventually the band was disbanded in 1999.
Fate finally brought both of them back together and with Zachreen slowly developed his songwriting skills, Witherspoon was formed. They both quickly obtained the service of their close friends, Shazril and Zahiri as 2nd guitarist and drummer respectively. Soon after that, Shazril left the band due to work commitment and was replaced by Azim Hulaimi, Zach's aquaintance, who agreed to fill in Shazril shoes, not as a guitarist but rather on synthesizer/piano/backup vocals which took the band into a whole new musical direction and different dynamics.
“Scapes & Sounds” was released in 2008 which is an E.P containing 7 songs produced by Bakry Ismail (Koffin Kanser, Meet Uncle Hussain, ROB).
Their first single, “Tingles & Everything” quickly gain attention from overseas labels and listeners and was included in Asian Shoegaze Compilation by Quince Records, representing the only band from Malaysia in that compilation together with bands from Indonesia, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries as well. Also, “Tingles & Everything" was offered to an airplay on Manchester’s Bing Satellites radio residing in Manchester, UK.
