Xander Filmalter is an South African songwriter & singer.
He has been active in the music scene & been in bands since he was seventeen.
“I have had no formal training as a musician. It
has always been my passion to craft music and lyrics to convey a certain idea
or message. It is my way of clearing and examining the deepest corners of
my soul. I have been surrounded by music for as long as I can remember. My
mom loved playing her Queen records, my dad used to listen to Charlie Pride and Golden Earring... and it rubbed off on me.
I have always loved writing poetry and have
won numerous poem competitions, which also helped me to pay for my first
car. My career progressed naturally from lyricist to guitarist and singer, as I
needed new skills to complement a previous one,” he shares.
Always being the songwriter in his previous bands, later taking on the lead
vocal and guitar duties as well, he has crafted his style over time, chasing
sincerity and authenticity rather than complexity.
Music served as his favorite escape, feeding his hunger for creativity
and adventure.
As Xander states “… songwriting, to me, is about capturing a moment or an
emotion and then trying to attempt to paint it with words and sounds. It’s
often messy, like an artist trying to carve something he feels inside out of a
block of marble. Finding the right word for the right part is similar to cooking
pasta; you keep it simmering until you throw some spaghetti and it actually
sticks to something.
