YB (an acronym for Young Bells) is the latest drill rapper to emerge out of Kennington, South London. At age 20, he’s part of a new generation of rappers taking over the drill scene and making their mark on the music industry.
YB started experimenting with making music back in 2015. Although it was a hobby back then, YB still put time and energy into creating tracks and even releasing a music video. Fast forward to 2019 and YB saw that he could turn his hobby into a career — that’s when he started taking his music more seriously. Growing up in Kennington, inspiration and encouragement came from all around him — the Spartans doing their thing, friends recognising his talent and his older brother who also made music. Seeing how music can change people’s lives for the better also gave him the push he needed. Tracks like ‘Shit Den’ (2019) from Blanco and YS and ‘E’r’ (2015) ’ by TG Millian, YS, Blanco and LM, were pivotal in showing YB what he could achieve and create with the right surroundings, support and graft.
His focus now is working on and perfecting the craft and his first serious release ‘Sense’ (2021) proves just that. A characteristically drill track, YB is dropping bars with ease and energy, making listeners want to hit repeat again and again. “I don’t want people to look at me as just another drill rapper from the hood which is why the video is not focusing on the block.” Overall, his sound is characterised by memorable punchlines and catchy word play.
