By entwining ambient beats with layers of hip hop and world music, Johan Gustafsson - more commonly known by his artist name, Yellowbase - has succeeded in carving his own path in the music world.
Born and raised in the west coast town of Uddevalla, Sweden, Johan spent his early years listening to his parents’ collection of metal, punk and rock vinyls on their old Pioneer PL-A45D record player, later finding influence in the music of Eminem, Gorillaz and Damon Albarn.
With drums as his first instrument, Johan played in a punk metal band throughout his teenage years, but later began to teach himself piano and more recently bass guitar. At 16, he began to focus more on the writing and production side of music, using his DAW to experiment with broad soundscapes.
After touring Europe with his eclectic hip hop band between 2011 and 2013, Johan then moved back to his hometown of Uddevalla, Sweden where he lives today composing and producing music on a full-time basis.
He has admitted that for him “it’s very rare to go into the songwriting process with a melody or idea in mind” and this spontaneous, free flow of creativity is something that characterizes the 2018 EPs Let It Rust
and Slow Food.
