Yo Momma – NYC’s Lost Funk Renegades
Born in the raw, sweat-drenched NYC funk underground of 1996, Yo Momma brought the fire of James Brown, the grit of Sly and the Family Stone, and the smoothness of Prince to the downtown scene. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Jonny Shemz(Blacklighter) and bassist Assaf Spector(Loforia)—introduced by guitar legend Gordon Gaines—Yo Momma quickly grew into a powerhouse with drummer Tamir Muskat (Balkan beat box, Ape records), a horn section: Thomas Hutchings (sax) Indofunk Satish (Trumpet) and keyboardist Brockett Parsons (Lady Gaga).
The band’s sound was pure, unfiltered funk—no gimmicks, no polish, just groove. In 1998, they recorded their debut album, but before it could be unleashed, the band imploded, scattering its members across the globe. The album was lost… until now.
More than 25 years later, through a twist of fate, Yo Momma’s long-lost debut has been resurrected, remastered, and finally released. The members remain active, and whispers of reunion shows and a documentary hint that the legend isn’t done yet.
