Yonic Youth began in 2018 on Hamilton College’s campus, when two members-to-be of the band noticed a green apple with wings painted on a mural. The green apple (the symbol of Kirkland, the womxn’s college of Hamilton) had a yonic quality to it, which begged the question, “Is it an apple? Or is it a vagina?” Yonic Youth was born.
The band began as a reclamation of the music scene at Hamilton as one for womxn too. Since its birth, Yonic Youth has cycled through various combinations of members, with a total of 11 alumni. Every year born anew with different femme-identifying musicians, Yonic Youth is not only a band but a greater symbol of solidarity - a voice for marginalized groups on campus, and has no plans of dying off soon.
This dynamic nature of the band lends to Yonic Youth’s diverse and ever-changing sound, mirrored in their first EP, Fruit of the Womb. From a slow ballad to punk, all of the different sounds are linked by the common theme of womxnhood.
The EP was created by 5 members, Joyce Lee ‘20 on keys, Isabel Royer ‘20 on vocals, Julia Opatrny ‘20 on drums, Sara Jadbabaie ‘21 on guitar, and Jane Taylor ‘22 on bass guitar.
