Your People has days of both triumph and pain securely fastened to him. Living in the belly of America - oppression, racism, love and mental health circle his head as themes that translate into the invigorating conscious rap & hip-hop he creates - echoing the voice of a brighter future, led by future generations.
Born into a Black community in Memphis, TN, the omnipresence of legendary local group Three 6 Mafia during his childhood influenced much of his early music. At age 13, his life changed when a 2,000 mile move to the suburbs of Pleasanton, CA truly opened his eyes to the differences of these two cities.
The dissimilarities in culture and music have contributed to the eclectic and diverse infusion in YP's work. Although rooted in being grounded and self-aware, he continues to fight personal and societal battles. Early triumphs over identity, fatherlessness and relationships while growing up in a white community mean that he often finds himself leaning into the future. His desire for the sound and vibration of tomorrow is an ethos that recites the struggles and triumphs of today. His signature, cerebral make-you-think wordplay marks the very core of his truth-centric bars.
Both his conscious message and actions look sure to bring change. Your People brings change through music, words and actions.
