Kenyan-American rapper and producer Yung Koded became one of Kenya's A-list Hip Hop artists in late 2020, after the release of heartsick Suicide (from Amass (2019)) gained people's attention on YouTube. Suicide; made up of wavy, dreamy melodies, and a rap-sing flow, crafted a sonic blend that drew upon styles similar to contemporaries such as Juice WRLD, Post Malone, and Polo G. In the same year, he followed with high-profile collaborations such as Exray Taniua, and Breeder LW pushing him up the limelight in the Kenyan Music Industry.
Born Erick Mobegi in 1997, the Nairobi musician grew up listening to country, rock, and R&B, turning to rap music in high school. Influenced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, Mobegi began recording as Myzz, a moniker derived from 'Miz' ('lover boy'), his nature in middle school. His early tracks were all posted online, leading up to 2019's Amass EP -- the home of his debut track Suicide and seven (7) other songs -- which he produced and engineered.
At the rise of his mainstream career in 2021, Koded released a catalog of freshman tracks that further attributed to his growth. His top songs, such as Cheza Chini (featuring Shanty Flames),Fuego (featuring Trio Mio), Tulia, and Find You (featuring Lexsil), reflected a wide range of stylistic influences: R&B, Hip hop, afrobeats, pop, and even indie rock.
His distinct style in music, visuals, and fashion have no doubt attributed to the growth of the Kenyan music industry.
