Shoegaze is a guitar-driven, texture-forward branch of indie rock that layers vast walls of sound with hazy vocals submerged in the mix. Its name, a tongue-in-cheek nod to the performers’ habit of staring at their pedalboards rather than the audience, was popularized by the British press in the early 1990s and stuck as a descriptor for a sound that often feels like standing inside a sonic cloud.

Historically, shoegaze emerged in the United Kingdom at the tail end of the 1980s and blossomed in the early 1990s. Bands around Reading, Oxford, and London began to fuse dream pop’s atmosphere with noise-infused guitar currents, creating densely reverberant textures that shifted from quiet, almost ethereal verses to explosive, guitar-driven crescendos. The period’s crown jewel is widely considered to be My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless (1991), a record that codified the genre’s signature blend of detuned guitars, tremolo, chorus and delay effects, and a vocal mix that often receded behind the guitars. Other foundational acts—Slowdive, Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse—laid down a parallel path of shimmering soundscapes and melancholic melodies that defined the scene as much as MBV did.
