Alex Kuple is an Indonesian musician whose career spans over two decades, marked by his versatility as a bassist, composer, songwriter, music producer, and teacher. He first gained prominence in the 1990s as the bassist for Nugie & ALV Band, a group that played a pivotal role in shaping Indonesia’s grunge and alternative rock scene. With the band, he contributed to five albums under Aquarius Musikindo, one of Indonesia’s largest record labels: Bumi (1995), Air (1996), Udara (1998), ALV (2001), and Senyawa Hati (2003). Beyond bass, Kuple showcased his multi-instrumental talent by recording piano and acoustic guitar tracks and co-writing several songs. The band’s hits, such as “Tertipu,” “Teman Baik,” and “Tak Kasat Mata,” became radio and TV staples in the ‘90s, cementing their status as pioneers of grunge alternative rock in Indonesia. A highlight of this era was their performance at the 1996 MTV Jakarta Music Alternative Festival, sharing the stage with international acts like Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth, and Beastie Boys. He pursued solo work, releasing instrumental tracks with influences ranging from jazz and rock to post-grunge.
