Opening for the opener who was opening for the main act; that was Alexander Beetle’s job that night. First caboose of a three-carriage locomotive. With his 12-fret parlour guitar slightly out of tune, and a fist full of rusted harmonicas, he played songs - poetical meanderings from his old catalogue about bees and birds, flowers, and the Devil. He partnered these with new songs, loaded with firm stances and political concerns from land rights to the poverty line. With a big cup of wine, eftpos machines beeping, fridge doors slamming, pint glasses clinking, the crowd grew on a Thursday night, braving the stars after their five – listening - before their nine tomorrow.
Beetle lives in a chrysalis in the hills of Pinjarep/Wilman Country, nestled amongst the towering Jarrah trees. He makes relatively rare ‘trips down the hill’ to play his music for a wider audience, usually preferring to crow out the front of the local IGA for a gold coin or bottle of clean skin red wine.
‘Alexander Beetle Live at Mojos’ hopes to share a slither of what a live night with Beetle might sound like. Wrong chords, forgotten lyrics, friendly conversations, and songs he likes to sing about all matter of things and the worlds within them.
